PLANNING FORUM – PROGRAMMES (2014-15)

The inauguration of planning forum of the SN College Kollam was conducted on24/01/2015 at G2 seminar hall. Dr. Kumar S P, the convener of the Planning Forum welcomed the chief guest and the gatherings. Dr. K B Manoj, the principal of the college presided over the meeting. The activity of the Planning forum was inaugurated by Dr. Nirmala Padmanabhan, HoD, Dept. of Economics, St. Teresa’s College, Ernakulam. The felicitations speeches were delivered by Dr.K.Maya, HoD, Dept. of Economics, SNC Kollam, Dr. K. Sreevalsan, HoD, Dept. of Chemistry, Sri.R.Premkumar, Associate Professor, Dept. of English. The meeting was concluded with an vote of thanks by Sindhu Pratap of the dept. of Economics.
In her keynote address, Dr.Nirmala Padmanabhan focused on ICT and Women. She emphasized the need for e-governance on gender equity and she familiarized the students with some government web site. She reiterated the need for women empowerment through ICT. The student’s interaction was very effective and interesting. Dr. K.B Manoj emphasized the role of students in taking initiatives in the various activities in the planning forum. Dr.K Maya talked about state planning and budgeting. In his speech D r.K.Sreevalsan focused on the importance of planning forum as an extension activity in higher education. Sri. R. Premkumar has given a perception regarding various activities that can be undertaken through planning forum. Totally 104 (hundred and four) members participated the meeting. The meeting came to an end at 1.00 PM.
Dr.Kumar S P, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Economics of the college has delivered a speech on Financial Inclusion on 9th March 2015 at Seminar hall. He pinpointed the relevance of financial inclusion in a developing economy like India. During his speech he illustrated various investment opportunities available to the students.At the end of the session there was an active interaction with the students.There were hundred students participated in the programme.
As the part of the closing function of planning forum, on 15th March 2015, a Debate was conducted on union budget 2015-16. The programme was conducted by Mr.Vincent Vijayan and Smt. Sindhu Pratap. The debate conducted in such a way that exemplifying pros and corns of recent budget. There were energetic arguments on political as well as economic effects of budget on various sections of society. The debate continued on two hours and concluded with a talk of Mr.Vincent Vijayan.

PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION (PTA): 2013-2014

PTA has taken up a no. of activities to ensure the all round welfare of the students by funding for the implementation of programmes and facilities.
1. Educational assistance to the backward students
2. Medical support to students
3. Aid to conduct the CBCSS internal examinations
4. Salary to guest faculty
5. Expenses of class-wise PTA meetings
6. Paid to 2 securities, 3sweepers, one night watchman, one computer operator and two office staffs
7. Paid the telephone, internet, cables and electricity charges
8. Financial support to several academic & other activities including letter pads, various registers, facing sheets, tutorial forms, etc
9. Met 40% expenses of printing the College HandBook 2013-2014
10. Maintenance work
11. Met the expenses to the “Merit Award 2012 -2013and Prathibhasangamam 2013”
12. Expenses of Onam & Christmas celebrations
13. Financial assistants to various clubs
14. Tiling work of seminar hall & AA’s room
15. Installed a public addressing system to Dept. of Sanskrit
16. Fund to Sree Narayana Centenary Debate Competition

REPORT OF PTA MEETINGS 2013-14

TUTORIAL SYSTEM

FIFTH SEMESTER – B.Sc / BA / B.COM
ENGLISH

The PTA meeting of fifth semester BA students of English department was conducted on August 5, 2013 at 1:30 pm in the college seminar hall. The principal inaugurated the meeting and addressed the gathering. The teachers of the department discussed with the parents the various academic issues faced by their wards. Parents of 35 students attended the meeting. Representatives of the parents also addressed the meeting and shared their opinions.

MALAYALAM

The PTA meeting of fifth semester BA Malayalam students was held on August 29, 2013. The meeting was presided over by the principal. Effective interaction took place between the teachers and parents. Parents of all the students participated in the meeting.

HINDI

The first PTA meeting of fifth semester BA Hindi students was held on August 1, 2013 at 2 pm in room no. G27. All the teachers of the department and the parents of 21 out of 24 students were present for the meeting. The HOD and other faculty members handling the classes addressed the meeting. Appreciable effective participation was there from the part of the parents during the interactive session.
ECONOMICS

The PTA meeting of fifth semester BA students of Economics department was conducted on July 25, 2013 at 1:30 pm in the college seminar hall. The meeting was chaired by the HOD and inaugurated by the Principal. All the teachers of the department and the parents of all 61 students participated in the meeting. Academic progress of the students were discussed and the importance of maintaining the general discipline of the college was reiterated.

POLITICAL SCIENCE

The PTA meeting of fifth semester BA students of Economics department was conducted on July 30, 2013 at 1:30 pm in the college seminar hall. The principal inaugurated the meeting and addressed the gathering. The teachers of the department discussed with the parents the various academic issues faced by their wards. Parents of 41 students attended the meeting.

HISTORY

The PTA meeting of fifth semester BA History students was held on September 30, 2013 at 1:30 pm in the college seminar hall. The HOD and other faculty members addressed the meeting. Academic status of the students was discussed in detail with the parents. Parents of 25 students attended the meeting. Representatives of the parents also addressed the meeting and shared their opinions.

MATHEMATICS

The meeting of the PTA of fifth semester B.Sc Mathematics students was held in on August 2, 2013. The function was presided over by the principal, who addressed the meeting and mentioned the importance of maintaining the general discipline of the college. Academic performance of students was discussed with the parents. Parents of 42 students attended the meeting.

CHEMISTRY

The PTA meeting of fifth semester B.Sc. students of Chemistry department was held on September 17, 2013. The meeting was presided over by the principal. Effective interaction took place between the teachers and parents. Parents of 27 students participated in the meeting.
BOTANY

The meeting of parents and teachers of fifth semester B.Sc. students of Botany department was held on September 6, 2013. The principal presided over the meeting. The HOD, class tutor and other teachers spoke at the occasion. Discussion was carried out about various matters regarding the academic progress of the students. 22 parents were present for the meeting.

BOTANY AND BIOTECHNOLOGY

The PTA meeting of fifth semester B.Sc. Botany and Biotechnology students was conducted on September 9, 2013. The meeting was presided over by the HOD. The meeting discussed various issues regarding the academic performance and the general conduct of the students in the college. Parents of 10 students attended the meeting.

ZOOLOGY

The meeting of the PTA of fifth semester B.Sc Zoology students was held in on August 23, 2013. The function was presided over by the principal, who addressed the meeting and mentioned the importance of maintaining the general discipline and increasing the academic standard of the college. Academic performance of students was discussed with the parents. Parents of all the students attended the meeting and shared their concerns and suggestions.

COMMERCE

The PTA meeting of fifth semester B.Com students was conducted on August 27, 2013. The meeting was presided over by the principal. Effective interaction took place between the teachers and parents. Parents of 54 students participated in the meeting.
THIRD SEMESTER – B.Sc/BA/B.COM

MATHEMATICS

The meeting of parents and teachers of third semester B.Sc. students of Mathematics department was held on October 18, 2013. The principal presided over the meeting. The HOD, class tutor and other teachers spoke at the occasion. Discussion was carried out about various matter regarding the academic progress of the students. Parents of all the students were present for the meeting.

ECONOMICS

“Gender Sensitization” Programme
Under the auspices of the Sexual Harassment Complaint Cell and the Legal Literacy Cell of Sree Narayana College, Kollam, a seminar on “Gender Sensitization” was conducted in connection with the World Women’s Day, on 7th March 2014. The seminar talk was presented by the Police Superintendent (South Zone) of Vigilance and Anti-corruption Bureau, Sri S. S. Firoz.
Prof. P. Radhamony, Co-ordinator, Sexual Harassment Complaint Cell welcomed the gathering. Principal Dr. A Sushama Devi presided over the function. Felicitations were offered by Dr. R. Jayaprasad of Politics Department, Dr. B. T. Sulekha of Zoology Department and Sri. K. S. Ghosh, College Union Chairman. Dr. K. V. Sanalkumar, Co-ordinator of the Legal Literacy Cell proposed the Vote of Thanks.

SREE NARAYANA STUDIES FORUM-2013-2014

Sree Narayana Study Centre has been formed with the intention of promoting the teaching of the Great Saint, philosopher and social Reformer Sree Narayana Guru. The Study Centre interested to impart knowledge of the Guru’s vision and his works to the student community. Another objective of the Centre is to conduct lecture series by eminent scholars and writers on the Guru’s life and philosophy.

The activities of the Sree Narayana Study Centre are co-ordinated by Sri. K. Jayaprasad and five other members consisting of Sr., M.B. Lissy (Dept. of Botany), Dr. S. Leelakumari Amma (Dept. of Hindi), Dr. R. Maniyappan (Dept. of Sanskrit), T.S. Latha (Dept. of Philosophy) and P. Radhamani (Dept. of Commerce).

The activities of the Sree Narayana Study Centre 2013-14 were inaugurated on 8th January 2014 at the Seminar Hall, S.N. College, Kollam at 10.30 A.M. Sri. Sajeev Krishnan noted writer and orator and the senior sub editor, Kerala Kaumudi,
inaugurated the activities and delivered the Lecture on “Sree Narayana Guru, his philosophy and ideals”.

Dr. A. Sushamma Devi, Principal, S.N. College, Kollam presided the function. Dr. K. Jayaprasad Co-ordinator, Sree Narayana Studies Centre, S.N. College, Kollam welcomed the gathering and T. Abilash, Associate Professor, Dept. of Political Science,, S.N. College, Kollam proposed the vote of thanks.

More than 130 students of the college attended the function. The programme got much media attention and coverage.
‘Daivadashakam’ Centenary celebrations:

Another important programme conducted the Sree Narayana Study Centre needs special attention. To mark the centenary year of ‘Daiva dashakam’ the esteemed prayer song written by Sree Narayana Guru, the study centre conducted on inter collegiate ‘recitation competition among the students of the colleges in the Kollam city Corporation on 18-2-2014 at the Seminar Hall, S.N. College, Kollam. Twelve students representing four institutions participated in the recitation competition. The winners were given cash prize by Sri. Vellappally Natesan (the Manager, S.N Trust Colleges) along with the merit day celebrations of the college on 20-2-2014.
